21/10/2007
A big weekend where Lucas Leiva, fondly referred to back home as 'The Brazilian Gerrard', receives his first taste of the atmosphere and passion of a Merseyside derby.
Replacing Stevie Gerrard as a substitute midway through the second half, Lucas showed his remarkable ability, producing some marvellous footwork and piecing together several intelligent passes of piercing accuracy.
In injury time Lucas Leiva blasted an on-target ball goalwards during a period of great pressure, but was robbed of the match-winning goal by a blatant cheat by former man utd defender phil neville. Seeing that Lucas's shot was goal-bound, neville's hand denied him the glory with what could arguably be described as reflex 'save of the season' before taking the resulting red card walk of shame.
Fortunately, Kuyt stepped up to slot the penalty home and claim the full 3 away points - which team-player Lucas Leiva, good sport that he is, would be the first to agree was the most important thing on the day.
Manager Rafa Benitez said after the match: "We weren't keeping the ball very well and were in too much of a hurry sometimes with our final pass. I put Lucas Leiva on because he is a very good player who can pass the ball well for us. In the end, Lucas helped us win the game by having the shot that led to our winning penalty."
Liverpool fans will be bouyed by Lucas Leiva's display. His performance causes Rafa a happy selection headache as the talented Brazilian international stakes his claim as candidate for more regular 1st team selection in centre field.
Lucas Leiva - Profile
According to Wikipedia: "Lucas Leiva started his career with Grêmio, making his first team debut on October 22, 2005 in a 1-0 win over Náutico in Serie B.[1] Grêmio went on to win the league that season, gaining promotion to the top tier of Brazilian football.
2006 was a successful year for Lucas Leiva and Grêmio, winning the Rio Grande do Sul state championship (the Campeonato Gaúcho) for the first time since 2001, and also coming third in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A. Lucas Leiva also became the youngest player to ever to receive Placar magazine's Bola de Ouro (Golden Ball), given to the best player in the Campeonato Brasileiro — an honour previously won by the likes of Zico, Falcao, Careca, Romario, Kaka and Tevez.
In October 2006 Lucas Leiva was brought into the senior Brazilian squad for friendlies against Kuwaiti club Al-Kuwait and Ecuador. Lucas Leiva was both the youngest member and one of only two non-Europe-based players in a strong squad. He made his debut for Brazil on October 7, 2006 coming on as a second half substitute against Al-Kuwait. Brazil won the match 4-0. However, this appearance does not count as his first cap as the match was not considered an official friendly match by FIFA.
His form in 2006 led to reported interest from many major European clubs including Palermo, Inter, Juventus, Atlético Madrid and Barcelona.

Lucas Leiva - Life-changing Reds Transfer
JUST ONE LOOK at the public domain videos of this lad's skill & ability is enough to show any fool that he is something special:
As young Lucas Leiva's transfer became imminent Rafa told the official LFC website: "I am really pleased he is coming to us...
"He is the captain of the Brazil Under-20 side and won the Golden Boot in his country last year, so we know he has quality and we also believe he has the mentality and the character you need to do well in England...
"He can play as a holding midfielder but he can also get from box to box and so I am looking forward to seeing him score goals for Liverpool in the future...
A lot of clubs in England and Spain were asking about him but our scouting department has again been working really hard and it's good that he's coming to us...
"We know it can take time (to adapt) but I think he has the quality to be putting pressure on Gerrard, Mascherano, Xabi and Sissoko next season."
LUCAS'S VIEW:
Lucas Leiva told Terra Brazil: "Regarding my transfer to Liverpool, to tell you the truth, I really didn't expect to leave Brazil so soon, but what I have been offered, and the team from which it came from, made it impossible to say no...
"Liverpool made me an excellent proposal from both a financial and professional perspective.
"In addition I know that my departure is going to give a big hand to Gremio for resolving some financial problems so that makes me happy and makes me calm with the decision that I took of accepting the transfer."
The 20-year-old will remain at Gremio until the end of their Copa Libertadores campaign and Lucas Leiva is hoping to leave the Brazilian club on a high.
"I wish to travel to England in July taking in my suitcase the Copa Libertadores title...
"I am very happy and thankful that I have been given the chance to remain at Gremio until the end of the Copa Libertadores because playing this competition and having the chance to win it is something that I have been waiting for since I was a child."
- LET THE YOUNG GUYS COME THROUGH! Be patient- given the opportunity, players like Lucas Leiva & Pachecho will show that we have a very bright future! Worry not- we WILL reclaim the league title veeeery soon!
